99 PIECES OF ART ON THE wALL : DENVER

A few months ago, I entered a local, charity art show titled 99 Pieces of Art on the Wall. 

I hadn't shown my art in a gallery since college, and had been wanting to get something out into the public and up onto a wall. I learned that the show was local, held at Access Gallery in the Santa Fe arts district. I was immediately interested when I saw that all proceeds from the event go to creating art opportunities for young adults with disabilities. Like the scatterbrain that I am, I signed up for the show in my mind...not online like I was supposed to...and began ideating. I wasn't sure what to make, but knew it would be confined to a 10x10 particle board - the only guidelines that every artist needed to follow.

Shortly after I learned about 99 Pieces, my boyfriend and I flew to NY for a long weekend. I was fully consumed by the art culture there. We went to a Rock 'n Roll exhibit at the MET. We took photos of graffiti all over the city. We shopped for artwork in beautiful home stores. We had dinner at Andy Warhol's old studio. Everywhere I looked I was surrounded by an overwhelming amount of every medium possible. I was inspired.

On the flight home, I whipped out my iPad to doodle, and this is what came out of my head. The idea was to create 9 miniature Rock N Roll album covers with elevated levels of cut paper. I've always loved small things, so tiny rock albums felt like the perfect solution for this small board.

When we got back to Denver, I discovered that I'd missed the deadline to pick up a board at the gallery. Over the course of the next few weeks, I worked on the project while trying to contact the gallery to see if they had any spaces left in the show. I was determined to get in but wasn't hearing back. I did a little digging and saw that the gallery was active on Facebook. I immediately received a response to my message that I could come pick up a board. I went straight to the gallery to pick up my board, and dropped my final artwork off the day before the show. It was great to see the young adults creating art at the gallery. I love that the proceeds from the show are for their benefit.
